SUMMARY:Small Groups: Taste of Spiritual Direction
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a 90 minute contemplative and interactive introduction to Spiritual Direction\, an ancient practice rooted in Hebrew Biblical and early Christian monasticism tradition and now reemerging within Jewish spiritual life. Together we will explore what this practice is and is not\, and how meeting regularly in a sacred\, confidential space can help us attune to the Sacred in everyday life and deepen connection to ourselves\, our community\, and the Mystery that flows through it all. We will share a period of silent meditation followed by reflection\, questions\, and space to notice what stirred. \nLed by Monte Dube\, a Jewish mindfulness teacher and spiritual director trained by the Institute for Jewish Spirituality and a longtime Mishkan Builder\, who accompanies individuals and groups on their spiritual journeys with care and presence. \nRegister \nThis program is sponsored by Maggie’s Place\, Mishkan’s holistic wellness center which provides support groups\, resources\, and pastoral counseling free of charge.

SUMMARY:Shavuot with Scholar-in-Residence Rodger Kamenetz: Dreams\, Revelation\, and the Sacred Everyday
DESCRIPTION:On Shavuot\, we celebrate revelation and the moment we received Torah at Sinai. But what if revelation isn’t only something that happened once\, long ago? What if it’s still unfolding\, in our dreams\, our imagination\, and the quiet moments of everyday life? \nJoin award-winning author and poet Rodger Kamenetz (The Jew in the Lotus) for a Shavuot learning experience that explores the torah of dreams and the ways sacred encounter can emerge through our inner lives. We’ll begin the evening with a community meal\, then turn to learning. Drawing on Jewish text\, especially the dream-filled stories of Genesis\, alongside his own work on imagination and spiritual practice\, Rodger will explore how Judaism gives us the tools to learn from our deepest feelings rather than bouncing from reaction to reaction in an a disorienting world. \nWe’re at capacity for in-person learning\, but we’d love it if you would join us virtually for the learning session starting at 7:00 PM. Register below for your Zoom link. \nRegister \nThere are more opportunities to learn with Rodger Kamenetz during his residency at Mishkan! He’ll be giving the drash at Shavuot Shabbat on Friday\, May 22\, and leading another workshop in the afternoon of Saturday\, May 23. We hope to see you there. \nThis program is sponsored by Maggie’s Place\, Mishkan’s holistic wellness center which provides support groups\, resources\, and pastoral counseling free of charge.

SUMMARY:Your Prayer Life Can Be Better
DESCRIPTION:This class is the first in a series designed for young adults to dig into Jewish spirituality\, created by Hebrew Seminary\, co-sponsored by Silverstein Base Hillel of Lincoln Park\, Anshe Emet Synagogue and Mishkan Chicago. According to Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel\, prayer should be an adventure of the soul– but that’s not how the average Jew would describe their experience in synagogue. This class will help you access the deeper meanings and parts of yourself that make prayer inspiring and fulfilling\, and hopefully give you the tools and confidence to have that soul adventure the next time you walk into shul. \nLight refreshments will be provided. American Sign Language interpreter will be present. All are welcome to attend at no cost.  This program is supported by a JUF Young Adult Engagement Grant. \nRegister

SUMMARY:Adult BMitzvah Cohort
DESCRIPTION:Maybe you never celebrated becoming a b’mitvah. Maybe you did—and want a chance to return with new questions and a deeper sense of who you are today. Our Adult BMitzvah Cohort is an opportunity to dive deeper into your Judaism by embracing an important ritual of Jewish adulthood (no matter your age!) Together\, we’ll explore what it means to be a Jew now\, build skills in Torah reading\, and develop our own interpretations of text. \nThe cohort unfolds over three modules: in April\, we explore what it means to become BMitzvah and our own Jewish journeys; in May we will learn trope; and in July we will write own drash (short sermons). We’ll culminate with two Saturday mornings in August\, where we’ll learn the flow of the service and celebrate together as you mark this moment publicly with the Mishkan community. Cohort participants must be Mishkan Builders and have learned the aleph bet prior to beginning the class (there are apps!) \nRegister \nAdult BMitzvah will meet on the following dates: \nApril 15\, 22\, 29 (6:30pm-8:30pm)May 6\, May 13\, May 20 (6:30pm-8:30pm)July 8\, 15\, 29 (6:30pm-8:30pm) August 8\, 15 (9:30am-11:30am)

SUMMARY:Friday Night Shabbat — Featuring Jeremy Ben-Ami of J Street
DESCRIPTION:Tonight’s service will feature a guest drash by Jeremy Ben-Ami\, the president of J Street\, the political home for pro-Israel\, pro-peace\, pro-democracy Americans. After services\, you are invited to join us for snacks (catered by Schmaltz & Vinegar!) and a Q&A session with Jeremy to learn more about his work and how we can get involved. Thanks to Ari Levine for sponsoring kiddush in honor of their birthday! \nDuring the High Holidays this past year\, Rabbi Lizzi shared the life-changing impact of her experience as a bone marrow donor through Gift of Life. Inspired by her story\, we’re excited to bring this opportunity to the Mishkan community by hosting two donor drives during upcoming Shabbat services on 4/10/26 and 5/8/26. Volunteers will be on site with swabbing stations to help participants complete their swab kits and learn whether they are eligible to become a donor—and potentially save a life. \nWatch the livestream on Mishkan’s YouTube channel. \nFor more information about Gift of Life\, visit their website. \nLooking to help out? We’re in need of volunteer greeters to welcome people into Mishkan before services. You can sign up here or email Michael at michael@mishkanchicago.org for more information!

SUMMARY:In the Midst of Darkness: a story of intergenerational trauma and healing\, with Mishkanite Rob Don
DESCRIPTION:Imagine knowing as a kid that your mom had been a survivor of the Nazi Holocaust. But imagine learning as an adult\, that she had been on Schindler’s list\, one of a handful of survivors saved by a German. So begins Mishkan Builder Robert Don’s story of reclaiming his family narrative and healing intergenerational trauma. He’ll be on Contact Chai discussing his new book\, In the Midst of Darkness\, which we’ll share out at Yom HaShoah. Join us after Morning Minyan to hear the conversation.  \nBio: Rob been changing careers from his professional background in senior risk management in corporate banking to becoming a writer. He recently conducted research in both the Auschwitz and Plaszów concentration camps\, where his mother was deported\, and is deeply familiar with the Holocaust stories being told. Having lived through his own family’s story\, he finally wanted to tell it through the lens of his own family’s experience. In the Midst of Darkness is his debut book. \nMinyan Zoom

SUMMARY:A.I.\, Cognitive Science\, and Judaism — Conversation with Joshua Cynamon
DESCRIPTION:After Morning Minyan\, join Rabbi Lizzi in conversation with Josh Cynamon\, who studies cognitive science and AI as a PhD candidate at Indiana University\, about the ups\, downs and cautions he sees in the emergence of Artificial Intelligence. \nBio: Josh Cynamon studied math as an undergrad at WashU\, and trying to understand how different people think differently about math was key to him ending up studying cognitive science. Between 2001 and 2021\, Josh worked most of his career in renewable energy\, first wind\, then solar (and wind)\, and then battery storage (and solar and wind). He found his way to graduate school at University of Indiana Bloomington in Fall\, 2021 to study cognitive science\, and the timing was such that he got to study cognition in both humans and the quickly developing AI models of the last few years. His goal is to work in AI policy once he’s completed his degree. \nMinyan Zoom

SUMMARY:Reading the Book of Esther as Literature
DESCRIPTION:They say history doesn’t repeat itself\, but it often rhymes. As we approach Purim\, join Rabbi Lizzi for a fresh reading of the Book of Esther\, not as history\, but as satire\, social commentary\, and timeless reflection on power\, identity\, and survival. Together\, we’ll explore how this ancient story captures the anxieties and dreams of Jews living in diaspora\, and discuss how this story mirrors our modern world — a source of both inspiration and caution for the moment we live in now. \nThis is a three-part class that meets in the morning on the following dates: February 12th\, February 19th\, February 26th. SUMMARY:What Happens When We Die?
DESCRIPTION:Death is the one thing every one of us has in common — and yet\, for many\, it remains shrouded in mystery and fear. This four-part class invites us to face that reality with courage\, curiosity\, and Jewish wisdom. Join Rabbi Steven and Mishkan’s Progressive Chevra Kedisha to learn the rituals and practices around death and mourning\, explore the landscape of end-of-life planning\, and reflect on what it means to live with greater clarity knowing that our days are finite. One of the greatest gifts you can give your loved ones is a plan — so that when the time comes (and it will)\, they can grieve fully without the added burden of guesswork. Let’s create space to talk about what scares us\, what sustains us\, and how our tradition helps us hold it all. \nThis is a four-part class that meets in the evening on the following dates: February 9th\, February 23rd\, March 9th\, March 23rd. \nRegister
