SUMMARY:Roots and Rituals: Exploring Faith\, Food\, and Culture with Lawndale Christian Community Church
DESCRIPTION:Join Mishkan Chicago and Lawndale Christian Community Church for a new series bringing together adults in their 20s and 30s to share meals\, study sacred text\, and build relationships across lines of race\, class\, and faith. Over four gatherings hosted in each of our communities\, we’ll explore biblical texts about land\, place\, and belonging — surfacing both shared and divergent understandings of our shared scripture while engaging in honest conversation about racism\, antisemitism\, and white supremacy. Along the way\, we’ll tour Lawndale and Maxwell Street — two Chicago neighborhoods with rich Jewish and African American histories — and taste some of the best food our cultures have to offer. \nRegistration is closed; this program is full.

SUMMARY:MLK Day Field Trip to Martin Luther King Jr Exhibit Center
DESCRIPTION:Join Pastah J and our friends at the Lawndale Christian Community Church for a Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration. Over 55 years ago Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. moved into North Lawndale and voiced these words: “we have some challenging days ahead\, some great and noble opportunities to make this a beautiful city that sits on the banks of Lake Michigan.” For most people still living in North Lawndale they are still waiting for opportunities mentioned in this quote to be realized in their North Lawndale community and their lives. On this day we will celebrate MLK’s work of the past\, talk about the working taking place in North Lawndale\, and the opportunities before us in the areas of housing and economic development. Following the event\, Mishkanites and leaders from Lawndale Community Church will gather for discussion from 2 – 3 pm. If you are interested in carpooling\, either as a driver or passenger\, please submit this form.\n\nRegistration has closed.

SUMMARY:Reflection and Renewal: Exploring the Jewish and Black histories of Lawndale on Tisha b’Av
DESCRIPTION:On this Tisha B’Av\, the most solemn day on the Jewish calendar\, we are heading to church at Lawndale Community Church\, led by Rabbi Lizzi’s friend Pastah J (co-pastor Jonathan Brooks). Together Pastah J and R’ Lizzi will co-lead a service on the themes of Tisha B’av\, helping us reflect on what it meant that so many Jews called this neighborhood home for decades – and then fled for the suburbs in the 1950s. We’ll tour the neighborhood together and discuss both the Jewish history of Lawndale and its predominantly African American present\, and we’ll talk about what role we might play in healing the ongoing legacy of white flight. \nRegister
