SUMMARY:Gimme Shelter: The Moth\, Interfaith Sukkot Style
DESCRIPTION:The Jewish holiday of Sukkot (Feast of Booths in the Torah) starts on Sunday\, Oct 16. It’s an awesome holiday- you build a fort in thebackyard or on your porch and basically do as much outside in it as possible– eating\, sleeping\, singing\, etc. The spiritual idea is three-fold 1. Remembering what living in the wilderness was like for 40 years\, not having a home\, being utterly dependent on God\, and being OK;  2. realizing that everything in this world is temporary\, and so we leave our constructed pretend-permanent houses and apartments and live in an impermanent shack to feel the liberating/terrifying feeling in our bones; and finally\, 3. to identify with those who live this way all the time and be more sensitive to the stranger\, the homeless person\, the person whose home isn’t stable or certain. \nThis year\, we’re gonna kick off Sukkot with stories: stories of finding shelter in the wild places of our own lives.  When have you run up against the limits of your self-sufficiency\, without your normal supports and comforts?  When have you had to rely on God alone (including\, of course\, in the form of the kindness of strangers and friends)?  Tell a story of a time when you were sheltered — from loneliness\, from need\, from the elements! — by hands not your own.  Or tell of the shelter you’re seeking still. \nThis event is brought to you by the good folks at Interfaith Family\, Moishe House Rogers Park\, Mishkan Chicago and Gilead Church. Can’t wait to see you in the Sukkah. \n  \nRegister
