Ellie Spitz

Director of Programs

Ellie graduated from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign with Highest Honors in Human Development and Family Studies and dual minors in Sociology and Jewish Culture and Society. She also holds a certificate in Jewish Leadership from the Spertus Institute and Northwestern University.  She received her Master of Social Work from Washington University in St Louis, where she worked for LGBT* Student Involvement and Leadership. She is was also the recipient for the Samuel A Goldsmith Award for her efforts in the field of Jewish communal service in 2017 and named one of Chicago’s 36 Under 36 by OyChicago in 2019. For many years before coming to Mishkan, Ellie worked in the programming world and as a counselor for college and graduate students – always pushing the envelope for inclusive practices. As Director of Programs at Mishkan, Ellie is in charge of community building, volunteer development, immersive experiences, and implementation of major programs and holidays. Ellie can be found in the office reciting the lyrics of pop songs as poetry or in her spare time learning how to play djembe, dominating in board games/anything competitive, or “adulting” like your standard millennial.
