Creativity And Jewish Spirituality With Rabbi Alon Ferency

March 19 @ 8:30 am - 9:30 am CDT

Following our March 19th session of Morning Minyan, join Rabbi Lizzi as her friend Rabbi Alon Ferency leads us in an exploration of how our spirituality informs our creativity — and vice versa. You can register by signing up for our usual Morning Minyan Zoom link.

I. Art Is Why We Believe in God
Are creativity and spirituality linked? How might thinking of God as the ultimate Artist change our faith? How can artists experience and express the fundamentally spiritual elements of their crafts? What would a community of artists – seekers, prophets, and heretics – look like? Join me to explore these questions and your own, in order to find, renew and transform your creative spirit.

V. Where Is Creativity?
How do you unlock, unblock and get unstuck to consistently deliver your most expressive self? Every artist writes into nothingness and needs the tools, techniques, and technologies to defy the empty page. Let’s survey artists’ stories and experiences and share best practices for becoming continually inspired.

VI. Sacred Text as Mythic Inspiration
“Immature artists imitate; mature artists steal,” said Lionel Trilling. Why not steal from the best?! The world’s heritage and canons of sacred text have connected seekers to mythic wisdom from millennia. Read Psalms, epics, and other sacred texts for solace, inspiration, and humor. Understand fiction as its own kind of revelation and  learn how to use symbols, meaning and metaphor in your own work. Learn about the Jewish traditions of understanding text through partnership (havruta), debate (pilpul), and pleasure (lishmah).
