Social Justice Bet Midrash

09/13/2016 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm CDT

As issues of social inequity and injustice, not to mention structural violence and dangers we read and hear about in the news become woven into the fabric of our daily lives, we risk numbing the very sensitivity that as Jews we try consciously to cultivate for the pain of the world so we can do something about it. Where are the spaces where we can build a deeper sense of Judaism’s voice as a wisdom tradition in the face of such brokenness, discussing and debating, learning, getting challenged and gaining confidence in our own moral voice?

Mishkan and the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs team up to bring Chicago the first all-levels, open-to-everybody Social Justice Bet Midrash. In this space, we will examine Jewish sources on current social issues, facilitating deep thinking, constructive debate and greater facility with Jewish text. Team taught by Aryeh Bernstein, the Mishkan rabbis and guest teachers, this space will bring Jewish learning to activists and access to Jewish justice texts to those who love learning. It will be a space for modeling constructive conflict and healthy dialogue across difference in seeking paths toward a just world. Our first deep dive will address Jewish views on immigration and refugees. The class is free of charge and open to the public, but you’ve gotta RSVP.
