On Tisha b’Av, we remember the most painful moments of our people’s history. While the destruction of the first and second Temples in Jerusalem are the big headline losses, this holiday has become a container for our collective pain over generations and into the present, and an opportunity to examine our own role in causing harm to ourselves and others. It is the one other 25 hour fast day on the Jewish calendar alongside Yom Kippur, but while the Yom Kippur fast has a redemptive and healing quality to it, the fast of Tisha B’Av has a mournful, regretful quality to it. Since Tisha B’Av begins at sundown on Shabbat this year, please join us for a seudah shlishit (last meal on Shabbat), text study and discussion about the holiday and its meaning for us this year, and Havdalah before our traditional reading of Eicha (Lamentations).
